EP Review - Biig Piig // A World Without Snooze Vol. II

Updated: May 29, 2020

I initially sat down to review Biig Piig Vol. II: A World without Snooze on a Tuesday evening in a student union. A grave error. To my left, the sound check to an AJ Tracey gig was in full swing and behind me a salsa class (in full salsa?). Adding to the cacophony of Latin rhythm and grime beats, I was surrounded by chattering students. Not an ideal soundscape for tuning into the Irish born Jess Smyth, AKA Biig Piig.

I tried again whilst on a quiet train back from London – where Biig Piig currently resides.

There are 4 tracks on the R&B/Soul EP collaborating with Mac Wetha and KXRN. This comes following her first EP: Big Fan of The Sesh, Vol. I

Intro starts with a soothing voice, over chill, mellow beats instantly transporting me to a dreamscape as I settle into the rhythm of the train almost forgetting I’m on the draughty Abellio Greater Anglia service. The track ends with a phone call which blends into the backing, easily creating a blanket of ambient comfort.

Casio is one for the ASMR fans as the track starts with page leaves turning which made my toes curl adding to the full body pleasure this EP brings. I wanna push my fingers into slime and shout “oooh baby” (don’t ask, just search ASMR on Instagram). Like her other tracks it’s a real vibe, a mix of her beautiful soft voice and relaxed bars, I am enjoying this.

Nothing Changes is my personal favourite, the chorus “running round circles tryna clear my name” immediately got stuck in my head but not in the barney the dinosaur way. I don’t really have anything else to say other than to reiterate that it’s a really beautiful song.

Vete meaning “go away” in Spanish is the final track with a jazzy intro, harmonising vocals and a

satisfying “tock” tongue click which as you’ve probably already gathered does bits for me. She then sings in Spanish, which she learnt after living there for a number of years as a child. Finally the track cuts out into Smyth speaking “I just hope things get back on track”. Whatever that means for her, I hope so as well.

It all ends too soon for me, if I had to Marie Kondo my whole music collection this record brings me a hell of a lot of joy.

A genuine pleasure to listen to, Biig Piig remains one of my most recommended artists, I only feel regret that I didn’t post this review sooner as I feel I have deprived you all time from listening to her.
