Fast Burn by Slow Cooked Review

Following on from the delightful, tender broth concocted in my interview with Slow Cooked, I have the perfect drink pairing in the form of a track and video review from the man himself. Fast Burn is available now on Spotify and the video can be found here. This is how we digested the track.

“4am, you’re on channel 247, there’s something a little bit different”

We are presented with some opening shots from Gogglebox and a nice lady pressing the on button of a slow cooker. A shaggy haired, bearded man wearing glasses enters in front of the screen (Finnin Harris). As the beat kicks in, he moves in the way I feel we all would.

A stripped, metronomic cha-cha beat lays the foundations for the beautiful string work that intertwine over the percussion. These rich soaring strings drift in and out of focus, all the while the simple beat remains as a constant, adding a heartbeat along with the mysterious and sexy cello tone.

Having personally associated the cello with long, funeral-like drones. This track was the perfect gateway into swaying this foolish opinion. The track has a western film soundtrack feel, with a relaxed yet purposeful tone to it. Slow Cooked showcases the versatility of his instrument, plucking the strings in a guitar like fashion, creating a unique sounding timbre.

I can’t quite decide if it makes me feel a cool or warm breeze waft over me.

In terms of the video, I was unsure whether to utilise the full potential of my A level Media Studies class and give an exact frame by frame breakdown of the metaphors and connotations embedded within the video. For instance, I could give a plethora of insights into the dancing man - sometimes checking a watch that doesn’t exist, reflecting that watching this kind of programme and at this hour of the morning, time does not really exist in the usual way we know it.

However, I don’t believe I would discern more than a Spark Notes text, I think it better to allow you to consider these thoughts for yourself. The music heightens the reaction shots from the Goggle box viewers as they watch the cooker related Eastenders drama unfurl at the same time it being quite impossible to take your eyes off of Harris. Written and Directed by Slow Cooked who in a previous interview said “I absolutely love niche videos” this fever dream-come-music video definitely fits that category. You do need to watch this for yourself.

I am looking forward to more content both in sound and visuals from Slow Cooked and even more so anticipating live performances from him especially if he is allowed the creative freedom of the room. Needless to say, this is one I highly recommend checking out.
